Javier Zabala nació en León, España. Estudió Ilustración y Diseño Gráfico en las Escuelas de Artes. Ha ilustrado más de 70 libros, de algunos de los cuales también es el autor del texto. Sus libros han sido traducidos a 15 idiomas. Ha ilustrado textos de Cervantes, Shakespeare, García Lorca, Rodari, Melville, Chejov.

Es profesor de ilustración en España y en países como Italia, Colombia, Ecuador, México, Irán, Cuba. Entre sus galardones destacan el Premio Nacional de Ilustración 2005 y dos Menciones de Honor de los Premios de la Feria Internacional de Bolonia en 2005 y 2008. Además, ha sido finalista del Premio Andersen 2012.
